About Settle District u3a

Settle District u3a

Encouraging, enabling and facilitating local people no longer in full time employment to keep their minds and bodies in good order through learning, exercise and enjoyment – to learn, laugh and live.

Who we are?

Settle District u3a (SDu3a) is a charity (number 1095635) with around 400 members. It is affiliated to the national Third Age Trust. People are invited to join on an annual basis for a modest fee. A committee of trustees elected at the AGM administers the charity.

SDu3a is a member of WestNet a network of local u3as – Bradford, Ilkley and Craven. Being a WestNet member effectively means that a member of Settle District u3a has reciprocal membership of the other branches. You can register for a group activity in those u3as with no additional u3a membership fee (although you may be asked to contribute to any costs associated with membership of a group). Members of other non Westnet u3as can join as associate members at a reduced rate.

What we do?

We hold meetings on the second Thursday of each month, during which outside speakers talk on a wide variety of subjects. Usually these are held at St John’s in Settle where members can meet with other members over tea and coffee from 10.00am. These meetings are currently taking place in person and on zoom. Dates and details of speakers are on the website.

We have around 40 cultural, physical and fun interest groups. All groups are “self-help” and their number and variety depend on the willingness of members to contribute by facilitating, sharing and leading.

What it costs?

The annual subscription for new members will remain at £15 for a single person or £29 for joint membership. Members who pay tax may gift aid their payment as this gives us an extra 25% for each subscription. Members and non members are charged £1 for each monthly speaker meeting and 50p for each group meeting with some occasional extra charges. The membership year runs from 1st July.

How do we keep in touch?

We produce a monthly newsletter, which keeps members up to date with what is going on. It is mainly distributed by email.  A free paper copy is available for members who are unable receive emails or download it from the Settle District u3a website (www.settledistrictu3a.org). It can also be posted to members who provide SAE’s. The website is regularly updated and is a mine of information, particularly about groups, membership policies and historic information.

Third Age Matters is a journal produced by the Third Age Trust five times a year and is mailed to members unless they opt not to receive it.

How to contact us?

Committee members details are available on the website and they can be recognised by the name badges worn at monthly meetings.
