Birdwatching Group visit to Mere Sands Wood, Rufford

October 8 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

With intensive agriculture all around the woods and lakes of Mere Sands Wood provide a haven for wildlife at this time of year.  On the water we can look for Little and Great Crested Grebes and several species of duck including Teal, Pintail, Goldeneye, Pochard, Gadwall, Shoveler and Goosander. On the margins we might catch sight of less commonly seen birds like Kingfisher, Reed Bunting and Water Rail – and even Bittern. The woodlands are home to some special species too including Bullfinch, Tree Sparrow, Great Spotted Woodpecker, and Sparrowhawk. And if we are really lucky we might catch a glimpse of one of the UK’s rarest birds: the Willow Tit.
