About Settle District U3A

Along with many other organisations Settle District U3A is in a state of flux this year due to the implications of Covid 19. This document sets out our plans as we see them at the time of writing (August 2020). However these may be subject to change especially as regards meeting indoors. Please check our website – www.settledistrictu3a.org or contact a committee member if you have any questions.

Who we are?

Settle District U3A is a charity (number 1095635) with around 400 members. People are invited to join on an annual basis. A committee of trustees elected at the AGM administers the charity.

Settle District U3A is also a member of WestNet network of U3As. Being a WestNet member effectively means that a member of Settle District U3A has reciprocal membership of the other branches (namely Bradford, Craven, Ilkley & District). You can register for a group activity in those U3A”s with no additional U3A membership fee (although you may be asked to contribute to any costs associated with membership of a group).

Settle District U3A is affiliated to the Third Age Trust, an umbrella organisation bringing together all autonomous U3As from around the country so that Settle can gain from the experience of others.

 What we do?

We hold meetings on the second Thursday of each month, during which outside speakers talk on a wide variety of subjects. Usually these are held at a local venue in Settle where members can meet with other members over tea and coffee from 10.00am. However these are currently taking place using Zoom teleconferencing until we can safely meet in person again. Dates and details of speakers are on the website.

We have over 30 cultural, physical and fun interest groups from walking to dancing and singing to geology. All groups are “self-help” and their number and variety depend on the willingness of members to contribute by facilitating, sharing and leading. While social distancing is still necessary and meeting accommodation is not available many of our groups are still active and are meeting by Zoom.

What it costs?

The committee has proposed that the existing 2019-20 members will have their membership renewed free of charge (this has to be agreed at an AGM to be held by Zoom on the 10th December 2020).

The annual subscription for new members will remain at £15 for a single person or £29 for joint membership. Members who pay tax may gift aid their payment as this gives us an extra 20% for each subscription. When meetings take place in a venue members are charged £1 for each monthly speaker meeting and 50p for each group meeting with exceptional extra charges. The membership year runs from 1 July.

 How we keep in touch?

We produce a monthly newsletter, which keeps members up to date with what is going on. It is mainly distributed by email.  A free paper copy is delivered to members who are unable receive emails or download it from the Settle U3A website (www.settledistrictu3a.org). This is normally available and collected in person before the monthly meeting by those members not on line. It can also be posted to members who provide SAE’s. We have recently upgraded the website and it is a mine of information, particularly Group and historic information.

Third Age Matters is a journal produced by the Third Age Trust five times a year and is mailed to members unless they opt not to receive it.

 How to contact us?

All committee members are happy to help in any way.
Committee members details are available on the website and they can be recognised by the name badges worn at monthly meetings.
